                    How Does Hypnotherapy Work?

Right, I will explain this as easily as I can, there is no reason to be overwhelmed by science, in fact the less you know, the more effective it is… so here it goes.

We all have a conscious and un-conscious mind.  The conscious mind is in use from the time we get up from bed until the time we rest back down at the end of the day, it is involved in taking in everything that we are aware of, and everything that we think about.  When we sleep we switch off the conscious mind and access our sub-conscious.  This is why we dream, we are sorting through old memories, recent memories, old friends and new ones.  I like to think of it as re-organising our mental filing cabinet.

Well, hypnotherapy is the same thing although you are not asleep during the hypnotherapy sessions, you are in a trance, which is similar to sleep but it is an induced form of relaxation where the conscious mind is present, but set to one side so that the sub-conscious can be accessed and unwanted habits / feelings, addictions, fears and phobias banished.

It may surprise you to know that we naturally experience hypnosis throughout the day - daydreaming is a state of hypnosis.  This is when you are remembering something or imagining something so vividly that everything around you is ignored.

It also happens during those times when you are driving in the car, and you don’t remember very much of the journey from A to B and you find yourself saying “I don’t remember any of that.  Did I go through any red lights?”  It’s nothing to worry about because you were still in control.  Had a green light changed to red then your conscious mind would have jumped back in and broken the state.
